CLASSIC AGE 500bc-300bc
Athens and Sparta in 500 BC fought the Persians in a great war and during this time the Greeks started to use iron for making their swords. Spartan hoplites used swords during the 5th century, that were shorter in length than most other Greek swords. This was because of the way the Spartans liked to fight in war. They used this one side and shorter sword to get closer to their opponents. Xiphos was the Ancient Greek sword made of iron that was the most predominately used. This sword was made during the Classic Age. It was a straight sword that had blades on both sides of a leaf-shaped blade. It was very effective for fighting in battle because it made it easy to slash and stab. "Ancient Greek swords were given their much-needed development. Iron was mined, an iron swords were mass produced. Phasganon, a Homeric name for the straight leaf-edged sword, was now called xiphos" (History of Greek Swords). |
